Business Story – Jula Care
The global organic sanitary napkin market is predicted to grow by USD 1033.14 million during 2022-2027, accelerating at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.46% during the same period. Coimbatore-based women entrepreneur, Rejula Begum (also Rejula Mustafa), Managing Director of Jula Care, a manufacturer of hand-made herbal sanitary napkins made of surgical cotton, is leading the way for a happy period. Rejula, a costume designer and herbalist by profession, rebranded JULA Herbal Sanitary Napkins to Jula Care LLP.
The inspiration behind starting the business
“The driving force to start this business was based on personal hygiene and environmental concern. Personally, I had faced minor but several health issues using the locally available conventional pads sold in the market. I also started becoming concerned about the health of my family and friends,” says Rejula. She adds, “On researching about the regular pads, I had learnt that these pads contained chemicals like chlorine and artificial fragrances along with plastic-based fibres. Moreover, making pads using biodegradable non-woven fabric will be safe for our environment too. Keeping all these in mind, I felt the need and urge to come up with this product.”
Challenges are aplenty
Jula Care, with a core team comprising Rejula Begum, Shahin Sonali and Sunitha, is helping to resolve one of the biggest problems of the environment i.e., waste management through the control of soil pollution. Disposal of plastic/synthetic pads adds to the piling up of landfill and still seems to be an unsettled issue. On the other hand, it intends to eradicate some vital health problems related to menstruation through bleach-free, hand-made cotton pads made with herbs that can also keep rashes, odour, inflammation, etc. at bay.
Retention of labour, as it is a labour-intensive business; limited funds that are hindering the expansion of business on a larger scale; investment in the right marketing tools, particularly influencer marketing to impact product demand; and the competition of FMCG companies.
The company that is bootstrapped so far has won the Runners-up in ‘Social Entrepreneurs Award’ and the ‘Best Entrepreneur award of the year 2023’ from NNI.

Future of Jula Care
“We see ourselves establishing a mark in the market for hand-made pads made of natural products and essential herbs for women’s health. Having expanded beyond the borders, we hope to witness a reported rise in the overall health of menstruating girls and women by using our product,” concludes Rejula.
Jula Care – Truly Local/Native
✓ What are the local factors important to your targets when choosing to buy?
Low price seems to be the most important factor with some women who want to try the product, while trust in the local manufacturer through word of mouth/online reviews, especially pertaining to the organic nature of the product, and ease of availability are the top three factors important to our targets.
✓ Tell us about your R &D/Product development.
We stumbled upon research stating the harmful heating process that conventional pads undergo; the chemical content in synthetic pads and blogs about women experiencing itching, rashes and several other issues. Hence, we decided to make hand-made pads and added herbs keeping in mind the specific and overall health benefits of organic pads.
✓ How did you conduct your market research?
Primary data was collected from students, young girls who were new to using organic pads and women through surveys and informal interviews, while secondary research was conducted through analysis of news articles, blogs and journal articles.
✓ How do you ensure product quality?
Every employee is well-trained by the business owner. Each product is cut and sealed using a machine for size accuracy, sterilized for safety, clinically tested, and random inspection undertaken by peers.
✓ How do your products help the environment?
The plastic materials used in non-biodegradable pads take 250-800 years to decompose, and sometimes may never, while some are even burnt. Jula Care’s napkins replace such synthetic pads with bio-degradable pads made with surgical cotton to accelerate the decomposition process. Production of bleach-free pads made of hydrophilic nonwoven fabric is free of plastic. The raw materials for manufacturing the products are outsourced from different regions of Tamil Nadu and Mumbai.
✓ What makes your product ‘local’/’native’? Do you follow any specific culture?
Our product is hand-made by women from the nearby localities and made of cotton that is grown in our country. We also strongly believe in the healing power of nature and have implemented them by using herbs that have been consumed in our households and mentioned in the Ayurveda.
✓ How do you support the local farmers/producers & local economy?
Our main raw materials are cotton, non-woven fabric and four types of herbs including Neem, Vetiver, Aloe Vera and Fever Nut purchased from local producers in our state and neighbouring states.
✓ How do you deal with customer complaints or concerns?
We either reply to online reviews or have direct conversations with local customers trying to understand their concerns as well as answer their queries. We have also immediately incorporated some of the practical feedback shared by them.
✓ How are your targets responding to the ‘local’ trend? Tell us about your customer engagement.
It has been a mixed response as some are realising it is time to go back to the roots, while few others seem to have distrust in organic products as there are many established brands in the market. Customer engagement is through social media (WhatsApp, Instagram & Facebook) and direct interaction.
